Text Neck

Could the Pain in Your Neck Be from your Phone?

Main Street Chiropractic Offers Text Neck Pain Relief

By: Dr. Curtis Baird

If you are age 50 and over, you may have incorporated texting on your cell phone or smart phone into regular communications.

If you are between the ages of 30-50, you are probably sending and receiving at least five or six text messages on a daily basis.

If you are under the age of 30, statistics show you are sending a minimum of 3,000 text messages per month. In many cases, the volume is much higher.

Young and old alike have adopted text messaging into their life and it can be a pain in the neck – literally.

People who are frequently hunched over their mobile devices are experiencing headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain in rapidly growing numbers.  The curving of the body to read and send text messages is subjecting people to these painful health conditions.

Text Neck is the term that has been coined to describe the headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain that manifests from the curved posture created by using a mobile device to text.  In today’s world of technology and texting, the term Text Neck was developed to relate to the pain that can materialize from frequent texting. However, the condition has been around since before the first cell phone. Text Neck is the modern day term for the more classical health condition known as Forward Head Posture.

At Main Street Chiropractic, we’ve been helping patients find relief from the pain associated with forward head posture and text neck for over 30 years.  Texting is a form of communication that is only getting more popular. It’s important for people of all ages to keep their spine healthy to maintain good posture and prepare for the strain texting places on your body.

Forward Head Posture

Text Neck is the texting version of Forward Head Posture. Forward Head Posture or FHP is a health condition where the position of your head moves forward from the center of the shoulders. As your head moves forward your center of gravity shifts and the weight of your head dramatically increases. This can create a domino effect of painful and potentially serious health conditions.

Preventing Text Neck

There are steps you can take to prevent text neck.  Step one is keeping your spine and posture maximized and healthy. Regular chiropractic care is ideal for this. We will also show you quick and easy daily exercises and teach you techniques for holding your mobile device that limit strain on your neck and spine.
